NARS Foundation Residency 2026, Season II Fellow
ChaNorth Residency, Pine Plains NY, 2025
I am a Brooklyn-based artist working across sculpture, movement, performance, video, and installation. I create unconventional portraiture of bodies reconciling with lost rituals and weighted trauma. Born in New York but raised in Singapore, I study how my body was made and re-made in a diasporic setting. My interdisciplinary practice centers matriarchal practices and ancestral inheritance. I seek to re-imagine imprinted memories from body to form. My work takes shape in a choreography of flesh and mass through moving bodies and static sculptures, amplifying themes of permeability, abjection, and reassemblage.
In my performances, I conjure potent sites of confrontation within my diasporic body. I embody actions of mothering, cleansing, expulsion, and repetition to salve my re-assembled body that carries memories of a homeland while adapting to a new land. Tracing the physical and mental marks of displacement and migration within my vessel, I translate gestures into sculptures that appear in mid-movement. Using materials that reveal the consequential mark of my body, like forged metal, latex, and clay, my sculptures archive a performance that is no longer present for the viewer. In my static object-based works, I fragment body parts that pull or hang from one another to challenge the traditional ableist lens, expressing components of the self that maintain dignity despite capitalist dismantle. The body, at the center of my work, persists against an indiscernible violence in an effort of adaptation, subversion, and embracing the abject.

“If grief and trauma are elsewhere implied, their individual, corporeal manifestations are magnified in Choe’s sculpture located at the entrance of the exhibition.
Positioned where the wall and floor meet, a steel rod seems to sag under its own weight. With its surface bruised and battered, the rod is slouched over a thin string hanging from above, providing a bulwark against the form’s total collapse, recalling the unconscious physical mechanisms that enable everyday motion—life itself—to persist. “
