‘non-I’

A ceramic sculpture rests on the ground starring at its reflection. An homage to Julia Kristeva’s abject theory confronting Jacques Lacan’s mirror stage theory. While Lacan argues the mirror stage describes the formation of the ‘I’ (the self), Kristeva argues the messy and traumatic expulsion of the ‘non-I’ (the mother) is required to make that ‘I’ possible.
